New Stitch Monday – Skipped Tent with Brick Beading

Today I am sharing a stitch and I have to admit that I have never used before.  I usually type up the stitch guides for Ridgewood Needlepoint and in one of the guides that Gretchen did she used Skipped Tent with Brick Beading on one of the Raymond Crawford Christmas Finials.  Be on the lookout, in the coming months we will be debuting the finials with stitch guides.

The stitch looked interesting but I didn’t have a photo to show how it looked so I stitched up a quick sample using some stash thread and beads from on of my 15 different Tacky Bobs.  Set up the Skipped Tent stitch first and then add the beads.  I think I would normally try to match the bead to the thread I am using but after stitching this up I see there can be many ways to change how it would look by changing the color of the bead.  Go darker or lighter or use a totally different color than your thread.  When beading I generally use an invisible nylon beading thread.  Some stitchers like to use a beading thread that matches their beads.  It’s a personal preference.  Give it a try, I know I will.

We have this classic patriotic Sandra Gilmore canvas on sale today.  It is on 18 count canvas and it offers so many possibilities for different stitches.

To add some texture, do the geranium flowers using River Road Silk ribbon or a combination of Neon Rays and Neon Rays Plus.  For the wooden siding of the house try the Gobelin Variation, a plain Gobelin stitch or try the Lazy Roman II stitch.   For the door try the Knotted stitch.  All stitches can be found in “Stitches to Go”.    Another great book to have for stitch suggestions for a project like this and many more that you will work on in the future is “Stitch – Ins & Outs for Interiors & Exteriors Plus”.

New Stitch Monday – Helen’s Lace

New Stitch Monday – Helen’s Lace

A few weeks ago, I saw someone’s post of a bird using Helen’s Lace as the feathers and it looked really good.  Then I remembered I did that stitch for a vase on one of my many unfinished canvases.  So, I dug it up from the closet only to discover that I still really liked this Maggie canvas and to my surprise the project was mostly finished.   Guess it will go into the “Let’s Finish This” group.  I do remember that I changed the vase it might have had dots on it.

I like to blend threads to get different effects.  Keeping in mind I haven’t work on this in years it looks like I used 2 strands of Bijoux and 2 strands of Valdani thread which is an over-dyed thread.   Splendor, Gloriana or any thread that you can ply will work.  Accentuate is another blending filament that can be used but I think you will have to play around to see how may strands you would need.   This canvas is 18-count so if you are going to try this stitch on a 13-count canvas you may have to play around with how many stands of each thread gives you the coverage you are looking for.  Give it try.

Happy Stitching,

Stephanie
